Buying a car
The first thing that you are going to have to think about if you are planning to buy a car is how you are going to pay for it. The best option would be to save up the money and pay cash. In reality however few people do that and they end up financing their car. If you are going to finance your car make the arrangements before you buy. You can almost always get a better deal by financing through your bank than through a car dealer. If nothing else having a pre-approved loan in your pocket before you start looking for a car will give you the opportunity to negotiate better terms with the dealer.
The next decision that you are going to have to make when you are buying a car is whether you are going to buy new or used. Most people prefer to buy new cars but you can get a great deal on used cars sometimes as well. Cars depreciate in value very quickly as soon as they are driven off the lot so a gently used car can be a great deal. However anytime you buy a used car you are running the risk of some unknown problem with the car coming back to bite you. It is up to you to decide if you want to take the risk to get a good deal or stick to a new car.
Actually shopping for the car is a fairly straightforward matter. The one you choose will largely come down to personal taste. It is a good idea to research the cars you are interested in before you buy but in reality these days all new cars are well built and reliable. Once you have found a car that you want you will have to make a deal to buy it. This is where a lot of people run into trouble.
In most cases you are going to have negotiate a price for your new car. You can of course pay sticker price if you want to but few people actually do. The best bet is to find out what the car cost the dealer, this can be easily found online, and then offer that. The dealer will of course counter and you will eventually come to an agreement somewhere in the middle. One thing to be careful of when negotiating is the extras that the dealer will try to sell you. In most cases you can get them cheaper as after market products so it is best not to get them from the dealership.
One other thing to keep in mind when you are negotiating the price of your new car is that you want to negotiate the price and the financing separately. A lot of dealers will negotiate with you based on the monthly payments, do not do this. Make sure that you agree on a price for the car and then work out the financing.
