Health insurance costs

There is no getting around the fact that health care is extremely expensive. That means that you are going to have to have health insurance to cover the costs. Even this can be very expensive however which is why many people do not have coverage. It is important to make sure that you have health insurance regardless of the cost.

Ideally when it comes to health insurance this will be provided for you by your employer. In this case you will really have little choice about the plan and will have to accept what is offered. If you don't like it you can of course buy your own coverage but this is a very expensive option. In some cases your employer will offer a group plan in which you will have to contribute to the cost. In almost all cases this will be cheaper than buying your own coverage so this is usually a good idea as well.

If you are one of the millions of people who does not get health insurance from your employer then you are going to have to look at the options that are available. In most cases you will be eligible for coverage by the government. This will require a small amount out of your pocket but it is usually quite reasonable. There are actually two levels of coverage offered by the government. Basic Medicare will provide you with just that, basic coverage for emergencies and certain routine treatments. There is also the opportunity to purchase supplemental coverage which provides things like prescription drugs. In general it is a good idea to get the supplemental coverage.

If you are not able to get health coverage from the government you are going to have to buy it on your own. This can be very expensive. You will basically have two options comprehensive coverage or managed care. You will get better treatment if you have comprehensive coverage since it reimburses doctors for each treatment individually. However managed care will be more affordable since it works on an arrangement in which the doctors are paid on a subscription basis. These days the vast majority of people are finding themselves going with managed care plans because of the cost.

One of the biggest decisions that you are going to have to make when you are choosing a health care plan is the size of the co-payment. This is the money that comes out of your pocket. The larger the co-payment is the lower the premiums will be. Therefore in general if you are reasonably healthy and don't see the doctor all that often you are going to want to have a high co-payment but if you have a medical condition that requires regular visits to the doctor you will want to go with a lower co-payment.
