Living together: a changed financial situation
Living together is something that a lot of couples are choosing to and do and in a lot of ways it can be a good idea. However you do have to be aware that you when you do live with somebody your financial circumstances will change. The change won't be as drastic as getting married but there will be changes.
There are certainly financial benefits to living together, the biggest is that it will allow you to save a great deal of money. Obviously if you are sharing an apartment it is going to be much cheaper than if you are both living separately. While this can be a major perk of living together in and of itself it is not really a reason to start doing so. There are some serious financial issues that you are going to have to deal with if you are living with somebody.
The biggest thing that you are going to have to look at when you move in together is how you both handle your money. If one of you saves regularly and the other usually spends their entire paycheck before the next one there is going to be trouble. Inevitably if this happens one of you is going to end up having to carry the other. This is not really a situation that you want to be in and it will lead to fights. You have to make sure that you are both in agreement about how your finances are going to work before you make the decision to live together.
The other big thing that you are going to have to think about is how the bills are going to be paid, and more importantly about whose name will be on them. It may make sense to only have one of you put your name on the utilities or the lease, especially if one has bad credit but the person doing this is taking a pretty big risk. If you do break up the person whose name is on all of these things is going to be the one who gets stuck with the bills. If you are doing this because your partner has bad credit you might want to think about why they have bad credit in the first place.
At some point you are probably going to have to make the decision about combining your finances. That means getting a joint bank account and credit cards in both or your names. In general this is not something that you are going to want to do until you have been living together for awhile. There is a lot that can go wrong when you combine your finances so you are going to want to wait a while and make sure that living together is working out before you take this step.
